Early detection saves life…!!
For early detection, there must be two major components that need to be considered. One is early diagnosis which focuses on cancer or precancerous changes of symptomatic patients before they grow and spread into late stages. and another is screening where healthy individuals are tested before cancer symptoms occur. Both help in better treatment with less aggressive therapies, avoid future medical complications, and eventually increase the chances of survival rate. If cancers are caught at an early stage most effective treatments are more likely to succeed and increase chances of cured diseases complete recovery and increased quality of life and longevity. Early diagnosis allows individuals and their families to educate themselves and make them decide on further plans.
Various Detection tests for early diagnosis:
- Multi-cancer detection (MCD) tests search for bits of DNA or RNA that may be shed by cancer cells.
- Medical imaging such as X-ray, CT scan or MRI.
- Laboratory tests that are used to catch cancer early include:
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Blood protein testing
- Tumor marker
- Urine Cytology
- Circulating tumor cell tests.
Along with diagnostic testing the complete evaluation of a patient usually requires a thorough family history and physical examination.
How can screening help?
Physicians examine patients even though they are seen as healthy.
If you have a family history of cancer, you should be alert as it may become a risk factor to certain types of cancer.
Not all cancer can be detected through screening tests. Following types of cancer can be screened early:
- Lung cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Colorectal Cancer
- Skin cancer
